Ask anyone who runs an agent chit what the hardest part is, and they almost never say the money. They say the month. The notebook that only they can read. The WhatsApp group where the last four messages are stickers. And the evening before every auction, spent ringing twenty adults about a payment they already agreed to.
The chit itself is simple. Running it is not.
What an agent chit actually is
A chit fund is a rotating savings group. A fixed number of members each contribute a fixed amount every month, for as many months as there are members. Each month the pool goes to one member — by auction, where the lowest bidder takes a discounted pot, or by draw. By the end of the term everyone has taken the pot once. It is a savings scheme and a loan at once, depending on whether you lift early or late.
An agent chit is the version run by a person rather than a company. The agent — the foreman — forms the group, vouches for the members, collects door to door, hands over the pot, and earns a commission on it. No branch office. The whole thing runs on that agent's reputation on that street.
You will hear it called different things depending on where you are standing:
| Region | Term |
|---|---|
| Kerala | Kuri |
| Tamil Nadu | Chitty |
| Andhra Pradesh, Telangana | Chit |
| North India | Committee fund |
| Globally | ROSCA |
Registered chit businesses in India operate under the Chit Funds Act, 1982 and its state equivalents; agent chits sit anywhere from a ten-member family kuri to a full-time operation. Wherever yours sits, your records are what protect you when a member forgets, disputes, or disappears.
Why an agent chit breaks past twenty members
Up to fifteen or twenty members, memory works. Past that, three things start to fail, in this order.
- Telling everyone. Every cycle, every member needs a reminder. That is not one message, it is twenty — and next month, twenty more.
- Finding everyone. New members join through referrals, from streets you do not know as well. "Near the temple" stops being an address.
- Proving everything. Who paid cash, on which date, and who is two cycles behind. Without proof it is your word against theirs.
Vasool runs chits and lending in one app precisely because these three problems are operational, not financial.
1. Every chit member gets reminded, without you chasing
This is the part that gives an agent their evenings back.
Vasool sends per-collection WhatsApp reminders to chit members automatically. When a member's contribution is coming due, they get a message. When it goes overdue, they get one too — with per-loan de-duplication, so nobody is pestered twice for the same due while a genuinely overdue member still hears from you.
Two details matter for an agent chit specifically:
- Reminders are sent server-side, through your own WhatsApp provider account — Meta, Interakt, Gupshup, WATI or AiSensy. Messages go out under your business identity, not from a shared number your members have never seen.
- The reminder is tied to the collection, not a broadcast list. A member who has already paid this cycle does not get chased — exactly the mistake that costs an agent credibility.
Reminders were always possible — you could type twenty messages. The difference is that reminding stops being something you have to remember to do.
2. The app holds every chit member's location
This is the problem most chit software ignores, and the one that actually slows a round down.
When you enrol a member, your agent captures the customer's location in the field along with their documents. It is saved once on the member's profile, beside their KYC vault and their referee or guarantor link. You never ask for directions again.
That saved location then does real work:
- The office dashboard plots staff and customer locations on a full-size live map, so you can see your whole group geographically instead of as a list of names.
- Route management orders the round door by door with GPS navigation and completion tracking, so an agent walks the street in sequence rather than doubling back.
- Every collection is tagged to its route, which is what makes the day book and end-of-day cash settlement add up.
An agent chit that lives only in the organiser's head is one hospital admission away from chaos. A chit where every member's location, document and due is saved is a chit somebody else can collect tomorrow.
That is the same argument we made about lending businesses that live in one person's memory, and it applies twice as hard to chits — a chit calendar does not pause when you do. The field-staff side of this sits in GPS tracking and staff tools.
3. Cycles, commission and late fees that add themselves up
The Agent Chit module holds chit groups, members, cycles and collections in one place. On top of that:
- Foreman commission is calculated as a flat amount per member or as a percentage of the contribution, with per-collection late fees applied automatically.
- Savings Chit schemes cover festival and deposit chits — a Diwali scheme with daily, weekly or monthly deposits — alongside the auction-style groups.
- Maturity payout is auto-computed or fixed, in cash or in goods, with redemption tracked to the end.
- Collections are recorded by voice, with photo proof and a timestamp, an automatic PDF receipt, and a full audit log behind every entry.
- Members check their own dues, balance and receipts in the self-service portal instead of ringing you.
Chits and loans are the same customers on the same street
Most agents who run a chit also lend — same neighbourhood, often the same people, definitely the same route.
Two systems means reconciling cash twice and maintaining each customer in two places. In Vasool a member can hold a chit and a loan, one agent collects both on one route, and the office sees a single combined cash position. The full lending platform — daily, weekly, EMI, gold and interest-only loans — runs alongside the chit module, not instead of it.
The same pattern outside India
The agent chit is not an Indian invention, only an Indian name. A chama in Kenya, an arisan in Indonesia, a susu in West Africa and a tanda in Latin America are the same instrument with the same problem: a coordinator, a fixed cycle, and members who need reminding and finding. Vasool runs in every country we support, with voice entry in the languages officers speak on those routes.
An agent chit is built on trust, and trust is easiest to keep when nothing depends on one person's memory. Save the member, save the location, and let the reminders go out on their own.
